Why I Never Delete Any Files – Operation: Save the Bride

This week was a wonderful week for me. I had gotten some incredible comments from clients and vendors alike and overall, everything was going pretty well.

…And then I got an email from a panicked former bride. It was the general gist, “We’ve moved house, Nigel, and I can’t find the USB drive with all my wedding files!”

(Yes, I used to hand out USB Drives. I know… stone-age.)

In any case, as I told my client during our orientation meeting – I don’t delete any photos, not even RAW files. I invest heavily in external hard drives plus I have a wonderful fire and water proof safe where the old drives are stored. I’m now in the process of documenting the old drives by year, further broken down by sub folders for each quarter.

Yup, I’m getting better at this data storage thing.

With that said, I was able to produce a real smile when I sent my client a link to a sleek on-line gallery of her two-year-old wedding, where she could relive her special day from her cell phone, tablet or compute – no more USBs!

When it comes to photography, I’m a pack rat because like my mother, I can’t bring myself to throw away any of these incredible memories. For my clients, it’s about never knowing when you may beed to dig into the old files. I guess it’s safe to say that my digital photography life looks like my mother’s basement… but far more organised. Love you mom.
